This is one of G.A. Henty' s better works, and his use of primeval English is flawless, if not highly gratifying for those with wide vocabularies.The story takes place during the Third Crusade under King Richard I. It is very much historically accurate with one or two inconsequential exceptions for romantic purposes (e.g. SPOILER: the troubadour Blondel did NOT discover King Richard's prison). The day to day events of the story however were obviously well researched.
It is very much pro- King Richard and somewhat neutral on the subject of the Crusades themselves. However it was written for young people so it's no small wonder the saucy bits were left out. All in all, a nice, light way of gaining some heavy historical insight and knowledge.

I'm sure you'll never read this but--
G.A. Henty' s main publisher was the same one who published many of Jules Verne' s novels, amongst others. So hardly self- published.
As for Henty' s "attempt" at writing "old English" please look up when the book in question was published...

This was the third I've read of this author and I look forward to many more )
My favorite thing about this and all his books so far is the characters he developed into history. It is fiction, but I've learned so much about the events in general also. His books are enjoyed by adults but would be appropriate for younger readers too.
I read this years ago in my early teens. I still love this story.
Long ago, in the 50's, a schoolteacher of mine read this book aloud to the class. Chapter by chapter we were immersed in the story and the adventure of children who were like us but living very different lives. I remember putting my head on my desk, closing my eyes and traveling with them to far away places and having adventures, meeting fascinating people and overcoming adversities. I don't know if children today will love it as I did ---- but I hope so!
This is my first foray into the writings of Henty, "With Lee in Virginia" being my intended next target. Henty is simple in style, and makes quite plain where the plot is going with transparent foreshadowing throughout. But Henty knows how to capture truth, goodness, and beauty. He knows substantive glory. He writes in "The Boy Knight" a tale like that of St. George and the Dragon. This book is a celebration of chivalry, loyalty, valor, and winning the woman upon much hard work. It is a tale to aid boys in becoming courageous men.
Cuthbert, 15, is the son of Dame Editha. Upon hearing that the Earl of Evesham along with men from around are planning to oust the outlaws from the forest, Cuthbert gains permission to go warn the chief, Cnut his cousin, so they can flee. On his way home Cuthbert witnesses the kidnapping of Lady Margaret, the earl's daughter. What can he do to help? Find the escaping outlaws to aid with their rescue. This action causes the earl to change his mind regarding the outlaws and instead he asks for their help with the siege against Wortham Castle and the baron responsible for the kidnapping.
Will the earl to war (Crusades) under King Richard and take Cuthbert as his page? The author provides great history on the previous crusades.
Whilst on the island of Sicily, Cuthbert overhears a plot to "disappear" Princess Berengaria. Can he and the other men save her when the abduction happens?
King Richard is absolutely furious when Princess Berengaria and Queen Noverra are captured by the king of Cyprus and sets off to rescue them. With the marriage between King Richard and the princess now celebrated it is time to continue on to Jerusalem. The fierce battle at Acre brings victory but the victory at Azotus is short lived. King Richard bestows knighthood on Cuthbert, 16, after he helped to save his life. Anyone that knows history will realize that this was an exceptional circumstance as knighthood was not usually granted until the age of 21.
Follow Cuthbert as he is captured and taken into slavery. Never giving up his character reminded me a little of Joseph in the Bible. The adventure is far from over though as he does escape. Who will he meet in the caves? You'll have to read the book to find out how. Exciting!
On October 11th, 1192 King Richard leaves Palestine. They deliberately separate into smaller groups. What happens on the way home? More adventures.
Our 12 year old son and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book. The chapters are all about 20 minutes long. The story was interesting as were the characters. You were really drawn into Cuthbert's life and battles. He had a quick mind and his schemes (logic) were helpful in many, many incidences. He never gave up even when he was facing the gallows and always acted the gentleman. The first rescue of Lady Margaret was not the last! FABULOUS READ!
Please note that there are NO pictures in the version of this book. It really did not affect the reading though as the descriptions were so well done that your imagination did the rest.

The Boy Knight A Tale of the Crusades is a wonderful book following the adventurers of a young man in his mid-teens as he slowly rises to high social standing as a result selfless bravery while with King Richard on a crusade to the Holy Land. There he battles with an enemy page on behalf of his master, thus elevating himself in the esteem of the nobles, endures slavery at the hands of merciless Palestinians, makes daring escapes several times, acts with great chivalry, and finally wages a successful battle later on to claim his robbed inheritance, at the same time rescuing the young damsel of his dreams, to whom he is engaged. All in all a fantastic story loaded with bravery, romance, suspense, humor, and action. Now one of my favorite books--a timeless tale!
I have purchased and read this book. Contrary to what another reviewer states, this book is NOT written in "Old English". It is written in modern English. The author employs a few archaic terms to give the reader a feel for the time period of the action. Robert Louis Stevenson, Howard Pyle, Walter Scott and other fine authors did the same thing in their works. As is the case for most of Henty's books, the hero is an upstanding British youth who is well (and rightfully) rewarded at the end of the story. Anyone who likes to read can enjoy this book.
