No country is as misunderstood as North Korea, and no modern tyrant has remained more mysterious than the Dear Leader, Kim Jong Il. Now, celebrity ghostwriter Michael Malice pulls back the curtain to expose the life story of the "Incarnation of Love and Morality". Taken directly from books spirited out of Pyongyang, Dear Reader is a carefully reconstructed first-person account of the man behind the mythology.

From his miraculous rainbow-filled birth during the fiery conflict of World War II, Kim Jong Il watched as his beloved Korea finally earned its freedom from the cursed Japanese. Mere years later, the wicked US imperialists took their chance at conquering the liberated nation - with devastating results. But that's only the beginning of the Dear Leader's story.

In Dear Reader, Kim Jong Il explains

  • How he can shrink time
  • Why he despises the Mona Lisa
  • How he recreated the arts in Korea
  • Why the Juche idea is the greatest concept ever discovered by man
  • How he handled the crippling famine
  • Why Kim Jong Un was chosen as successor over his elder brothers

With nothing left uncovered, drawing straight from dozens of books, hundreds of articles, and thousands of years of Korean history, Dear Reader is both the definitive account of Kim Jong Il's life and the complete stranger-than-fiction history of the world's most unique country.

Dear Reader The Unauthorized Autobiography of Kim Jong Il (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Malice Marcus Freeman Listen and Think Audio Books

Disclosure: I read this book as an unedited manuscript before its full launch and got it for free.

Before this point I did not know anything about Michael Malice, and not much about North Korea other than the pop-culture nonsense of the world view of him as a crazy quirky dictator.

This book is created out of Malice's use of about 60~ different books *actually from North Korea* and hundreds of articles' worth of research actually from the DRPK, as well as stuff written by others who have gone there. He has actually been to the country and that's where he got the books.

The book is written like an autobiography. Some of it is adding dramatization to it and building as strong a timeline as you can build from brooks that were 'written' by Kim Jong Il himself, including ridiculous things that he claims to have happened. These may not be written by KJI himself. That's not clear to anyone.

Occasionally international events happen - the Axe Murder Incident, for one - as well as his father's actual revolution.

The style is chaotic and bombastic and uneasy to read at times, with little mentions to the horrific situation in North Korea (concentration camps, the caste system) that read as afterthoughts but spell much greater dangers to the country.

The ending, within the last 10 pages, is brutal, heartbreaking and emotionally draining.

I do not like to read these kings of books, and forced myself to, and I was glad I did.

Dear Reader The Unauthorized Autobiography of Kim Jong Il (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Malice Marcus Freeman Listen and Think Audio Books Reviews

Written from the point of view of Kim Jong Il, this book is a wild ride that is both humorous and distressing. The mind of a savvy ruler who everyone knows can execute you at will, but is so fond of the surprisingly unanimous support he earns from virtually everyone he encounters and rules over. Growing up and watching his father save Korea, then rule it with an iron fist is fascinating as the false mythology is created along the way. It also reveals the humanity of awful people, while clearly outlining their reign of terror. Very informative historically, and a timely book as rhetoric heats up over North Korea. Not sure another single novel would fill you with more perspective, from a creative angle that holds your interest til the end.
Overall, I had much higher hopes for this book. Being written from Jong-il's perspective was a novel idea in theory but in reality it was only that; a novelty. The gag wears thin quickly and the book drags for very long stretches. Also, much of what is "revealed" here is already known by anybody who has spent even a small amount of time researching the struggles of North Korea. Attempts at humor fail miserably and the book is riddled with gramatical errors that constantly pulled me out of what little drama it had managed to build. The last few chapters are somewhat enjoyable, though still plagued by all of the aforementioned problems and so I am somewhat generously giving this book three stars. If you want a truly honest and captivating read about North Korea, you might want to look elsewhere.
This book serves as an excellent introduction to North Korea and Kim Jong Il himself. It is written from his perspective and the author strikes a good balance of humor, tragedy and brutality. This could have easily gone horribly wrong in writing from the perspective of the oppressor. However, Malice's ghostwriting talents serve him well.
The book's only drawback is the humor sometimes falls flat and some of the situations aren't as compelling or engaging as others. The middle arc before the famine comes to mind. There are also several grammatical errors in this book. While not crippling, it is distracting enough to wonder as to the name of the sloppy editor. The ending is also a rather sudden shift in tone and felt as if the author himself was speaking and hence a bit fourth wall. While it had the intended heartbreaking impact on me, I wonder if it may not have worked better as an epilogue written by Malice as biographer.

Overall highly recommended.
Great book. Writing it as an "autobiography" was a clever technique. It's a a funny read, but (semi-spoiler) the author kicks you the gut in the the last few pages for finding it funny. I would have given it 5 stars if there was a list of the author's source material and detailed endnotes.
I'm currently reading this book. So far it is fun. However, unless you know the history of Korea, it's not always clear which things Malice has Kim say that are untruths. Unfortunately, I don't really know the history of Korea pre-WWII (Japanese occupation), or even pre-Korean war (Soviet and US occupation/etc). So it's not always obvious which things Kim says that are patently false. Other aspects of the book are hilarious....but also depressing. Basically....it's a book of Kim Jong Il talking about how he and his father need to be worshiped...and how they've turned North Korea into a workers paradise. Sad...
I backed this book on Kickstarter as I'd been a fan of Malice for a few years. He accomplished in a striking way the task he set out in his pitch video to synthesize the public propaganda of North Korea into a narrative of the life of Kim Jong Il. It begins as silly as one might expect, considering the public persona of KJI. Sinister notes begin to appear before long and the last several pages are bone-chilling.

I've never before read a book that seemed so historically significant while detailing current events. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
Dark and deceptively funny. What starts of as an unofficial account of Kim Jong Il's life in recently liberated North Korea quickly devolves into a deeper look into the psyche of the man who controlled one of the most secretive nations in the world. At times amusing but mostly sinister, his blatant, unabashed and single minded view of what Korea wants and needs, leaves the reader feeling more uncomfortable than anything else. It was the ending (the last 4-5 pages) that really drive the point home. All said and done, it was a captivating read and gave me a long, hard look into North Korea. I did not like what I saw.
